= Too Blog Series | Week 2 “Double Shift, Double Standard”
Let’s talk about the real job.
Not the one on your offer letter, the one after the teams call ends. The one where you decode tone, shrink your voice, triple-check emails, and clean up the mess other folks leave behind. You know, the double shift.
Because when you’re a woman in the workplace, you don’t just clock in with credentials. You clock in with your armor.
The Real Job Description
Your actual duties?
Unspoken DEI Officer
Company Culture Therapist
Presentation Polisher
Code Switch Queen
Silent Strategist
Catch-all Communicator
Respectability Police
And let’s not forget: you’re also expected to be likable. Not too loud. Not too proud. Just grateful enough.
Meanwhile, Mike gets applauded for the same PowerPoint you edited at midnight.
Why We Work Twice as Hard
Let’s keep it real: We were taught we had to. “Work twice as hard to get half as far.” It was good advice from folks who loved us and lived through worse. But girlllllaa, that phrase is not a business strategy. It’s a trauma response wrapped in tradition.
It teaches us to over-function and under-rest. To believe burnout is a badge of honor. To hold in our “hell no” while smiling through nonsense.
Let’s Shift This Narrative
Here’s the truth: you don’t owe anyone your exhaustion.
You’re allowed to:
✅ Take up space
✅ Take your PTO without guilt
✅ Leave the office on time
✅ Not fix everything
✅ Ask for help without apologizing
✅ Do your job; not five of them
And when you stop doing the extra, you realize something:
You were never “too much” they were just too comfortable.
This Week’s Power Move 💼
Audit your invisible labor. Make a list of everything you’re doing that’s not in your job description. Then ask:
What can I delegate?
What can I stop?
What can I charge extra for?
Because Girl!, if you’re doing five jobs, you need five checks or at least five boundaries.
Coach Fatima’s Final Word
You’re not hard to work with. You’re hard to exploit. And that scares people who benefit from your silence.
So this week, I want you to rest not just because you earned it, but because you don’t need to prove your worth. You are the value.
You are = Too.
